Using computer algebra systems in mathematical classrooms
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes a research whose main focus is the use of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) in mathematical classrooms and the didactical possibilities linked with its use. The possibilities of integrating Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) within the CAS environment are brought into focus. Forty-three Israeli students (mean age 13.3) were assigned to two learning algebraic groups. The first group received explicit metacognitive SRL with CAS (CAS + SRL); the second group was exposed to CAS without SRL (CAS). Empirical results from the experimental and case study designs revealed that (CAS + SRL) students outperformed (CAS) students on algebraic thinking and that (CAS + SRL) students regulated their learning more effectively.

Computer Algebra Systems and Cultural Coherence in Mathematics Classrooms
Even today using Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) extensively in mathematics classrooms is still very often seen as a threat to the preservation of the mathematical culture. On the other hand, denying new technologies in the teaching of mathematics endangers the cultural coherence necessary for the technological development of mathematics and of society in general. After explaining briefly the co...
متن کاملEffects of Computer Algebra System (CAS) with Metacognitive Training on Mathematical Reasoning
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the differential effects of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) and metacognitive training on mathematical reasoning. Participants were 83 students (boys and girls) who studied algebra in four eighth-grade classrooms randomly selected to four instructional methods: CAS embedded within metacognitive training (CAS + META), metacognitive training...
متن کاملThe Microsoft Word Free Mathematics Add-In and Microsoft Mathematics Beta 4.0
This paper explores the use of powerful, free computer algebra system (CAS) software for the K-12 and university science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classrooms. Educational institutions are sorely in need of affordable technology. The financial reality facing many schools prohibits the allocation of limited resources for appropriate mathematical software. The free mathematic...
متن کاملPrimitive Ideal Space of Ultragraph $C^*$-algebras
In this paper, we describe the primitive ideal space of the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(mathcal G)$ associated to the ultragraph $mathcal{G}$. We investigate the structure of the closed ideals of the quotient ultragraph $ C^* $-algebra $C^*left(mathcal G/(H,S)right)$ which contain no nonzero set projections and then we characterize all non gauge-invariant primitive ideals. Our results generalize the ...
متن کاملFuzzy Acts over Fuzzy Semigroups and Sheaves
lthough fuzzy set theory and sheaf theory have been developed and studied independently, Ulrich Hohle shows that a large part of fuzzy set theory is in fact a subfield of sheaf theory. Many authors have studied mathematical structures, in particular, algebraic structures, in both categories of these generalized (multi)sets. Using Hohle's idea, we show that for a (universal) algebra $A$, th...
